9 Box Grid - A Performance Management Tool

What is 9 Box?

The 9 box model also known as 9 box grid is a visual tool widely used by the HR to map the performance vs potential of the employees onto a 3×3 matrix. The tool is a simple but effective for HR department and department managers to determine their employees’ current performance and future potential.

Who invented the 9 box grid?

McKinsey developed the 9 Box Matrix in the 1970s to help GE prioritize investments across its 150 business units. (Google Source)

How does it work?

Since the 9 box consists of 3 performance & 3 potential categories. When assessing employee performance, managers often pay attention to two things. First, how well they perform today, and second, how well they are likely to perform in the future. When creating a 9-box grid, it’s required to go through three steps. Assessing performance, assessing potential, and bringing it together & update in to the 9 box grid. After mapping employee to the 9 box, line manager will be able to get an idea about the subordinates & will be able to identify future leaders / will be able to plan employees’ development.

Pros

A 9-box grid is very easy to use. The tool in itself is simple to use and does not require a lot of setup.

It provides consistency in evaluation. Rather than relying on one-off conversations and different succession planning approaches, using a 9-box makes sure succession planning data is consistent throughout the organization. (Phillippi, 2017)

Cons

Managers’ perspectives can sometimes be subjective. We are all human. We all have different backgrounds and perspectives that lead us to make decisions, especially when managing people.

High performance from individuals does not always translate to success in a management position.  This is less of a con and more of something to keep in the back of your head as you complete the 9-box exercise. Not all individual contributors will have the aptitude to move into management roles. (Phillippi, 2017)
